The Lord Is My Shepherd

The Lord is my shepherd

Psalm 23:1a (ESV)
Here’s what you’ll need for today’s lesson:
  1. A Bible; turn to Psalm 23
  2. A TV remote

1) DO

Give one member of the family a remote control. Pretend that the remote has control over the rest of the members of the family. They can tell them to be muted (pretend to talk with no sound!), fast forward (run in place quickly!), rewind (walk backwards), etc. Let every member of the family have a turn being in control.

Sit everyone down and read Psalm 23:1a.

2) SAY

Do you know what a shepherd is? What does a shepherd do? (Allow time for answers.) That’s right! A shepherd is someone who looks after sheep. He gives them food and water and makes sure that they are ok. The shepherd also tells the sheep where to go so that they don’t wander into trouble! In a way, a shepherd controls sheep like a remote controls the TV!

3) SAY

The Bible tells us that Christians are Jesus’ sheep, and that He is the shepherd. (Read Isaiah 53:6.) The Bible says that “all we like sheep have gone astray.” What do you think that means? (Allow time for answers.) Right! It means that we were born with sin in our hearts and needing a Savior. Jesus, in His kindness, came to earth, died for our sins, was resurrected, and now offers salvation from our sins! I’m so thankful that God is in control of our lives!

End in a prayer. Example:

Lord, thank you for being our Good Shepherd. Help us to surrender control of our lives to you, because you know what is best for us. Thank you for the gift of salvation. It is a joy to follow You! Please allow our family to give you control over our thoughts, actions, desires, and choices today.
