Your Rod and Your Staff, They Comfort Me

…your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4b (ESV)
Here’s what you’ll need for today’s lesson:
  1. A Bible; turn to Psalm 23
  2. A broom
  3. Some pillows

1) DO

Put as many pillows as possible on one side of a room. Using a broom, the children must get all of the pillows on the other side of the room/couch as fast as possible.

Sit everyone down and read Psalm 23:1-4.

2) SAY

What rod and staff could this verse be talking about? Do you think it’s talking about the end of a broom? (Allow time for answers). A shepherd uses a rod and a staff to help the sheep go where he wants them to go. Just like you used your staff to help the pillows go where you wanted them to go. Why do you think the rod and staff comfort the author? They don’t seem very soft. (Allow kids to feel the end of the broom). Does that feel comforting to you?

3) SAY

The rod and staff are comforting because it’s leading the sheep to safe places. There is comfort in being RIGHT where God wants you to be.

End in a prayer. Example:

Lord, thank you for this special time together as a family. We know that right now, even though it may not be fun to be inside the house, we are RIGHT where we need to be, because we are safe here. Help us to find comfort in that! We love you so much. Amen.
