You Anoint My Head With Oil

you anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.

Psalm 23:5b (ESV)
Here’s what you’ll need for today’s lesson:
  1. A Bible; turn to Psalm 23
  2. A large cup of water with smaller cups of water for all participants
  3. A baking dish

1) DO

Have all players sit in a circle. Put the large cup in the center of a baking dish. One by one, have the players go around the room saying one thing they are thankful for while pouring a drop of water into the large cup. The one who causes the cup to overflow is out! Play again and again until there is one winner.

Sit everyone down and read Psalm 23:1-5.

2) SAY

What do you think the David meant when he said, “his cup overflows?” (allow time for answers). Do you think he meant an actual cup like this one? I think he meant that God gave him so so SO many blessings, his heart was as full as it could be!

3) SAY

Earlier we named some blessings as we went around the circle. The blessings that we named are gifts from the Lord! Do you know anyone who needs a blessing today? (Allow time for answers—the more specific the better). Let’s pray for them!

End in a prayer. Example:

Lord, thank you for blessing us in so many ways! Our cups are so full. Please help us to remember the needs of those who were mentioned today. Please show us ways in which we can be a blessing to them! Thank you for this day, and for all the ways in which you take care of us. We love you! Amen.
