I Shall Not Want

I shall not want.

Psalm 23:1b (ESV)
Here’s what you’ll need for today’s lesson:
  1. A Bible; turn to Psalm 23
  2. A pair of socks
  3. A marker
  4. Paper towels

1) DO

Get 10 paper towels and number them each 1-10 with a marker. Scatter them around the room, the higher numbers being the hardest to reach and the lower numbers being the easiest. Grab a pair of socks that are folded together and try to get the sock to land on the paper towel squares. Each participant gets as many points as the number their socks lands on!

Sit everyone down and read Psalm 23:1.

2) SAY

What do you think King David means when he says, “I shall not want?” (Allow time for answers) Great answers! I think what King David means is that he has everything single thing that he needs. His blessings are so many! Let’s read another verse that talks about blessings. Can someone look up and read Geneses 22:17? (read aloud) Wow! God was going to bless Abraham with more descendants than there were sand on the seashore! Imagine if all of us grabbed each and every sock from the house and landed it on the 10. What would that number be? It would be a big number! God’s blessings are even more than that.

3) SAY

Even though we have all that we need, is there anything you are scared of being taken away or not having? (Allow answers). How does that make you feel? We can trust God when we have those feelings. Do you remember the story of Moses in the wilderness? (Read Exodus 16 for reference). The people were hungry and feeling scared that they would run out of food. It looked impossible! But then, God in His goodness brought manna, or bread, from the sky! Wow! God will always provide for us. I am so thankful for that today.

End in a prayer. Example:

Lord, thank you for your many provisions! You have blessed our family by giving us all that we need—clothes, shoes, food, a roof over our heads, love, and so much more. Help us to use the blessings that you have given us to help other people, maybe even someone in our own family! We love you so much! Amen.
