The Chosen

The Chosen can be an incredibly useful resource for families as they get to see a visual adaptation of Scripture on their TV. It is important to note that the creators take creative license as they write the show to fill in gaps. So we recommend a few things as you enjoy the show together:

  1. Watch the show together as a family. This way, parents can help answer questions as they arise from children. It is also a time for parents to recognize that they may have questions too that can be researched.
  2. Look up the Scripture references and stories in the Bible. This is important because it allows families to know what was creative license in the show and what we know for a fact actually happened in Scripture. This is also a chance to double down on the story and the lessons.
  3. Recognize that the Chosen is not a Bible replacement. Reading Scripture should always be a priority. The Chosen should be a tool that helps bring Scripture to life. The show is not “word-for-word” scripture in some places, but it is “true to the Bible” and focuses on what is possible or likely to have occurred behind the scenes.
  4. Focus on Impact: The Chosen should hopefully drive us to read the Bible more. Seeing the life of Jesus lived out on the screen should hopefully fill us with a desire to spend more time in the Word. The Chosen can make Jesus feel more real and approachable to kids. As they see the actors act out Scripture, they may find it easier to believe and trust Jesus.

Friendships

Navigating friendships with other adults can be hard by itself…but part of parenting is about helping your child figure out their friendships as well. What makes a good friend? What happens when a friend is mean to you? Are we supposed to be friends with everyone? All these questions are valid, and so are all the friendship sagas your children will encounter as well. Here are some resources from Fellowship’s Counseling Center to help you down the friendship path with your kids.

Cultivating a Thankful Home

You’ve probably heard it said that “Comparison is the thief of joy.” That feels true. The more time you spend focusing on what others have, the less time you spend appreciating the things right in front of you. This November, we encourage you to cultivate a thankful home with your kids. That can look different for every family, but here are some fun ideas:

- Create a “Thankful Tree” – trace everyone’s handprints and cut them out to be the leaves. Let kids add a leaf to the tree everyday with something they are thankful for.

- Memorize a Bible Verse together about thankfulness like Psalm 107:1 “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, His love endures forever.”

- Have a “Thankful Jar” in your kitchen and let everyone write or draw something everyday they are thankful for. On Thanksgiving you can read all of them out loud.

- Think of someone you can send a “Thank You Note” too – maybe they were helpful, maybe they have been extra kind, or maybe you are just glad they are part of your life.
