Yukon Ho! (Upcoming Classes)

It’s hard to believe, but the 6th graders in our Yukon Ho! classes are well into their trek through the Yukon and will soon complete their journey. As most of you know our curriculum consists of three sections:

  • Preparing for the Trek: The Trekkers get acquainted with one another and become part of a team that will encourage and support them on the dangerous journey ahead. They get their “gear” together and learn what is needed for a successful trip through the Yukon and life.
  • The Trek: The Trekkers are on the trail and are experiencing many dangers and traps. Here they learn to depend on Jesus Christ, the guides, and the map to avoid twelve hazardous traps like anger, bad language, and selfishness. Many of these traps are hidden from view so it takes an experienced guide to identify the warning signs and prevent the trekkers from getting caught in the traps.
  • Becoming Trekkers for Christ: The adventure has only begun and emphasis is placed on continuing the journey toward maturity in Christ. They learn what it means to live as children of light in a dark world.

Currently, we are in The Trek and have covered many of the traps. On June 6th and 7th , we will be covering Trap #11 which deals with how media can influence our ideas of how we should live. Part of this trap includes a discussion on pornography. Our discussion will center on Psalm 119:37, “Turn my eyes from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.”

The students will discuss how we need to guard against exposing ourselves to things that are not true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8). Our goal is for the students to understand the importance of following God’s commands in all areas of their lives. Due to the sensitive nature of this discussion, boys and girls will be separated for this lesson.

It is our desire to help students think through situations and the consequences of their actions before they are in those difficult situations. Our prayer is that they would look to Jesus Christ, their parents and our map (the Bible) to avoid theses traps of adolescents.

If you have any questions about this lesson or any of the “traps” that we have discussed, please talk to your student’s teacher or contact one of the 6th grade coordinators.
