21 Day Devotional: Day Eighteen

September 28th

See

Ecclesiastes 7:2 (NIV84)

2It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of every man; the living should take this to heart.

Leave it to Eugene Peterson to put the cookies of Ecclesiastes 7:2 on the lower shelf…

2You learn more at a funeral than at a feast—After all, that’s where we’ll end up. We might discover something from it.

While we understand that God is a God of unlimited abundance and bounty without end, we often forget that we are human, limited in supply and capacity. Our days are few in number.

Ecclesiastes 6:12 (NLT)

12In the few days of our meaningless lives, who knows how our days can best be spent? Our lives are like a shadow. Who can tell what will happen on this earth after we are gone?

Shadows don’t last very long. This term “shadow” also refers throughout Ecclesiastes as “vapor” or “mist.” You know – here for a moment, then…gone. We get the point.

Let’s all spend a few moments “seeing” the image below and pondering these two things:

  1. Imagine your own funeral – who will be there and what will be said?
  1. What will you take with you?
