How Pastoral Training is Shaping Christianity in South Sudan

Posted on November 7, 2025

The church in South Sudan is experiencing explosive growth.  With rapid growth comes the risk of a great deal of misinformation mixing with the gospel on Christianity. In a land where animism and ancestral worship is common, there is an ever-present risk of Christianity being combined with traditional African beliefs, as it often takes a syncretistic bent combining elements of Christianity and the native animist tradition. James Baak believes that solid pastoral training is not only important but critical to help the church grow on a firm foundation. (Matt 7:24-25)

Transform South Sudan has adopted curriculum from the Bible Training Center for Pastors, which is designed to train remote pastors who are without access to formal seminaries for training. To date, Transform South Sudan has trained 618 pastors and church leaders.
