The Gospel at the Heart of Transform South Sudan

Posted on October 8, 2026

Fellowship Bible Church has a long history of partnering in ministry with James Baak.  Dating back to 2002, FBC has been sending teams over to South Sudan to assist James in all the areas of ministry he’s initiated through Transform South Sudan (TSS).  Many at Fellowship are aware of some transforming effects of TSS’s ministries.  These ministries have had a significant impact on their communities.

  • Lives are saved and health is being restored at the Achiek Clinic.
  • Hundreds of students are receiving a high-quality education at the Linda Primary and Hope Secondary Schools.  The brightest and best of these students become eligible for Leaders of Tomorrow college scholarships to learn valuable skills needed in their villages
  • Pastors and church leaders are formally trained through a mobile seminary program to equip and strengthen the church.
  • Women are improving the standard of living of their families through business training and microfinance loans.

Much is being done to educate, train and bring wellness and development to communities in South Sudan, but many are unaware that the Gospel is the motivation for all that James does.  The transforming work of Jesus Christ undergirds and weaves through every area of the ministry of Transform South Sudan.

The Gospel Is Central to Everything at Transform South Sudan

Healing: At the Achiek Clinic, people come to receive medical care at the ONLY medical facility within 100 miles.  “Achiek” is a Dinka word which means “Creator God”.  James gave this name to the clinic as a way of recognizing that it is ultimately God who heals through the agency of the skilled staff.  At this clinic, a chaplain prays for all patients who desire prayer and is prepared to share how Jesus is the source of true, eternal healing for all who believe.  Additionally, the chaplain speaks into the lives of the medical staff, and many have come to faith in Christ through these conversations.
In 2026 Transform South Sudan also installed 10 new wells in vulnerable communities which had the highest instances of waterborne illness.  When these wells were officially handed over to the various communities, James preached a sermon on “living water” from the gospel of John that resulted in hundreds of people in these villages giving their lives to Christ.

Educating: The students in Linda Primary School are taught how to read using the Bible, and all students in both primary and secondary school engage in Bible studies.  All the curriculum is taught from a Christian worldview.  In addition to the students receiving saving faith in Christ, they are going back into the villages and sharing the Gospel with their parents, and many of them have become believers.  Tukel by tukel, the Gospel is spreading throughout the villages in this area of South Sudan!

Equipping & Empowering: While the women are being taught about writing business plans, profit margins, and proper pricing, they are also being taught Biblical principles for business success.  Additionally, they meet weekly for thoughtful Bible studies and encouragement.

Pastor Training utilizes a 3-year mobile program that essentially brings the seminary to them.  All the pastors go through rigorous training as they become equipped to both plant and lead churches as the gospel goes forth.

And of course, James emphasizes that biblical forgiveness is the foundation for the reconciliation of relationships whenever he engages in peacebuilding and reconciliation programs.  This helps to promote peace among currently or formerly hostile groups of people.

Certainly, the gospel is at the heart of all that James and his team do at Transform South Sudan.  It motivates, inspires and drives them as it is the only hope for a truly transformed life.

James is grateful for the many years of support from Fellowship Bible Church in helping to bring the gospel to the people of South Sudan.
